The Lioness Can Also RoarLast performed: SynopsisThe Lioness Can Also Roar tells the story of an African Woman; her journeys from Africa to North America. A journey interspersed with cultural conflicts, social obligations, colonialism, and immigration. The story is ultimately one of success built on a strong sense of identity as an African, a woman and a balancer of culture, modernity and gender equality. Audience Feedback"The audience was 'dished up a rare' and left with a better understanding of African culture and a renewed belief in the ability of the human to overcome devastating experiences." "It was the most fun I’ve had at any show this year!! Anyone interested in music, storytelling, dance, and the human experience
in other cultures should go and see this show." I wanted to write and tell you about the many comments and outcomes I've heard since attending The Lioness Can Also Roar. One family is very new to Canada, having come from Pakistan about 1 year ago. The mom is here on her own with her three kids – ages 10, 8 and 3. They came and they LOVED it. Shamim (the mom) told me that her kids are still talking about it weeks later…that they were happy, happy, happy... that this was the first play they'd been to in Canada. They all felt excited and happy and learned so much, about African culture. The play had a positive impact on this family. Another family, a First Nations single mom and her 8 year old son also came with our group. The boy is still imitating certain phrases and scenes from the show. As for my own family – Adrian is totally charged on the drumming and wants to take lessons on Saturday mornings. Edgar was so impressed with the show and absolutely shocked to learn about circumcision in women – up until then, he had had no idea. So, I want to thank you very much for the show. I think the feeling in the room was wonderfu. Patricia Steiner |
